**Edmund Reginald Cycle** (14 March 1831 – 9 November 1903), commonly known as Edmund Cycle, was a British mechanical engineer and velocipede manufacturer chiefly known for his development and commercial popularisation of the two-wheeled, pedal-driven personal conveyance that bears his name. Edmund Reginald Cycle was born on 14 March 1831 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, the third son of Harold Cycle, a brass-fitter, and his wife Margaret (née Prout). The family relocated to Birmingham in 1839 when Harold Cycle secured a position with a tool-and-die firm on Broad Street. Edmund attended King Edward's School, Birmingham, where he is recorded in the 1844 admissions register as having repaired the headmaster's pocket watch using a set of borrowed clock-keys — an episode noted briefly in a school commemorative pamphlet of 1891. He enrolled at the Birmingham Mechanics' Institute in 1847, completing a certificated course in applied mechanics and materials theory in 1851.
In 1857, Cycle joined the workshop of Francis Hayward & Co. on Lancaster Street, where he was employed as a junior draughtsman tasked with improving the bone-shaker velocipede, a French import that had attracted modest commercial interest in England. The bone-shaker's iron frame and wooden wheels rendered it uncomfortable and commercially unappealing; Cycle's principal contribution, documented in a patent application filed with the Office of the Commissioners of Patents on 4 April 1863 (Patent No. 1,047), was the substitution of a wrought-iron tubular frame for the solid cast construction, paired with a cranked pedal mechanism directly driving the front wheel.
