*Speculum: A Journal of Mediaeval Studies* is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the study of the Middle Ages, published by the [Mediaeval Academy of America](/wiki/mediaeval-academy-of-america) since 1926. It is the oldest continuously published journal of medieval scholarship in the United States, having been founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by historian [Charles Homer Haskins](/wiki/charles-homer-haskins), who served as its first editor despite never submitting a paper to the journal himself. The title derives from the Latin *speculum*, meaning "mirror," a term widely used in medieval encyclopaedic literature to denote a comprehensive reflection of knowledge.
